Announcing the 2015-2016 PATCHWORK FARM MANUSCRIPT SERIES

Framework

The Manuscript Series is a 12-month program for writers with projects which call for critical response and new writing including novels, short stories, poetry manuscripts and creative non-fiction.

Manuscript Group
Manuscript Group 2014-2015

Program Guidelines Participants are writers in any genre who have made substantial headway in a writing project and are motivated to make significant progress toward its completion. They agree to meet the deadlines for manuscript submission, to read and critique in advance the manuscripts of the other group members, respond to manuscripts by email, and to discuss them at four 3-day intensives. Please see below for full calendar.

The basic framework of the Series includes eight deadlines for submission of work by email to everyone in the group. Each writer reads every manuscript submitted, and every other time responds with comments on the page by email and a summary letter when possible.

Four of the submissions will be critiqued in advance in this manner, and discussed at four 3-day writing and critique intensives. The other four submissions will be read by members of the group, with option for critique. In all cases, Patricia will respond with comments on the page and in a cover letter.

The series is limited to seven writers, plus Patricia, who make a commitment for the full year. Intensives take place at Patchwork Farm Retreat in western Massachusetts. A Skype session is scheduled at the beginning of the series and then as needed.

Manuscripts for each session include up to 40 pages of prose (320 total pages) or 7 poems (56 total poems) and are sent to group members 3 weeks ahead of each scheduled response deadline. In this way, by the end of one year, members will have reviewed each manuscript in its entirety.

Testimonials

Patricia’s Manuscript Intensive is a gift to writers desiring to develop and polish their chosen projects in a safe, generous, and productive environment. I have found Patricia’s critiques–and those of every member of our group–to be insightful and specific. The process has helped me to advance my craft and sharpen my critical skills in reading both poetry and prose. — R. M.

…. with real gratitude to you and the process you have led us in through the year. What a difference it has made for me. The structure of it, the deadlines, coupled with the careful attention from you and the circle of wonderful companions — what a soul nourishing and expanding experience. — S. B.

I had been working on my novel for a lot of years and couldn’t seem to get it together.  The deadlines and feedback offered in the manuscript intensive kept me on track and I was able to complete the darn thing!    The weekends are exhilarating and exhausting. It requires a lot of hard work to meet the deadlines and close reading in order to offer your fellow participants the best feedback possible. The writers are wonderful.  Your image of yourself as a writer will grow until it fills the mirror over your bathroom sink.  — MB

I have been re-reading my manuscript, essay by essay, editing as I go. Only after I’ve made my own edits on an essay do I go back to your comments and look at what you all have said. It’s incredibly satisfying to see the ways that distance helps me read my work more clearly and to see how often I agree with comments you’ve made. Then I incorporate your further suggestions. Every one of you has made comments and suggestions that are really, really helpful.  — BJ
